The mid-range Inspiron 14 5000 looks pretty stylish for a notebook in its price range. The lid has a nice brushed-metal finish, and we like how the front edge tapers upward. hp 14-b109wm charger The inside features a smooth, matte-black finish. Build quality is strong, with well-fitting joints and a stiff hinge. Our only complaint is that there is a little more flex in the keyboard than we'd normally like. The side panel and bottom plate covering the battery and vents are also plastic and highlighted with silver paint.
Screens and speakers
Dell highlights the 14-inch LED backlit HD touch display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. In practice, the screen doesn¡¯t live up to the hyper. officejet 150 mobile power supply , the Dell Inspiron 11 offers a similar display and seems to have better brightness than the 14. Unfortunately, the colors on the screen were washed out even with the brightness turned all the way up. HD content doesn¡¯t appear any better than SD either.Considering that other devices like the Surface Pro 3 offer higher resolution, xps 15 9530 charger it¡¯s clear that the Inspiron 14 5000 Series might not be the best option for an entertainment center. Occasional viewing is serviceable, but few people would have good experiences if they regularly watched movies or shows on the laptop.
Keyboard and Touchpad
Dell Inspiron 14 5000 Keyboard and touchpadThe Dell Inspiron 14 5000 features a full-size, spill-resistant keyboard with two levels of backlighting, which can be toggled from the function keys. The keys have good feel with an actuation weight of 55 grams and a key travel of 1.3 mm.pa5013u 1brs battery We averaged 65 words per minute using the Inspiron 14 5000's keyboard, very similar to our normal 70-wpm average. The touchpad (4.1 x 3.1 inches) is not as responsive as the keyboard. We had no problems mousing around and using multi-touch gestures for scrolling and zooming, but left and right clicks didn't always register. Users will want to stay closer to the bottom edges, instead of the middle, for the best results.
Display and Touch Screen
Dell Inspiron 14We expect better from a display at this price. With a low, 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, the Inspiron 14 5000 screen disappoints. When watching an episode of FX's "Fargo," we had a difficult time enjoying the blown-out, snowy landscapes and soft, undefined images. Contrast was also an issue, battery toshiba z830 as "The International 4 DOTA 2" tournament looked foggy and washed out. The only nice thing we have to say about the display is that it offered good viewing angles, both horizontally and vertically. In terms of brightness, the Dell Inspiron 14 5000's panel (209 nits) is brighter than the 14-inch ASUS VivoBook V451LA (173 nits, about $699) and the Toshiba Satellite E45T (161 nits , $679). However, this screen is dimmer than the category average of 216 nits.More troubling is the poor color reproduction. hp officejet pro 8500 power cord The Inspiron 14 5000 recreated just 52 percent of the sRGB spectrum, less than the ASUS VivoBook V451LA's 62 percent and the category average of 86 percent. Color accuracy was also poor, with a Delta-E rating of 9.8 (closer to 0 is best). That's behind the ASUS VivoBook V451LA's Delta-E of 0.7 and the category average of 6.8.Touch gestures in Windows 8.1 were responsive and easy to use. It was a cinch to swip in from the left to switch applications or from the right to summon the Charms menu.msi gs70 power adapter Too bad there's a thick bezel between the display and case. This creates a speed bump for gestures near the edge of the screen.
Features
Considering that the Inspiron 14 5000 goes above the entry level in many ways, we're disappointed that its touch screen has the same entry-level resolution, 1,366x768 pixels, as many smaller systems.medion e6220 akku Ideally, we'd like to see 1,600x900 resolution on 14-inch displays. The low resolution is an issue because it limits the ability to see detail, as well as limiting the amount of data visible at a time in productivity apps, and makes using two windows side by side impractical since you'll be doing too much scrolling in each window. The only saving grace is that other laptops around this price point usually don't offer any better; 1,366x768 is the lowest common denominator. The display's glossy surface helps contrast but acts like a mirror; asus a93s ladegerat nearby light sources will create reflections, which may or may not be an issue for you depending on where you use the laptop. It also shows fingerprints, so you'll want to keep a microfiber cloth handy. A more serious gripe about the screen is its merely average picture quality; it's not an in-plane switching (IPS) panel, so it realistically has about a 30-degree vertical window where the picture doesn't look washed out. Horizontal viewing angles fare better; there's some brightness shift but the picture largely remains intact.sony vaio pro 13 extended battery The 10-point capacitive touch capability is gratifyingly accurate and convenient. Sometimes it's just easier and faster to touch the screen than to use the touch pad or keyboard; we found ourselves swiping and tapping the display more than we expected, especially when using the Dell away from our desk. While the lightest tap of the screen's surface counts as a touch, you can use a fair amount of pressure, as the display hinge is sturdy enough to prevent wobbling. (Indeed, it's stiff to the point where two hands are required to open the display.)The Inspiron's full-sized keyboard includes three-level white backlighting charger for google nexus 7 (press the F10 key to cycle through full, half, and off). We're pleased to see the feature offered on a laptop at this price point. Layout is good, although as avid text editors we prefer to see dedicated Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys rather than having them relegated to Fn-key addenda within the arrow-key cluster. The keyboard is quiet enough to be used in any environment including a classroom or conference room, and we had no general use issues during our time with it. Its typing feel, however, leaves something to be desired; there's insufficient travel to provide much tactile feedback, which is puzzling considering the chassis is thick enough to accommodate a deeper keyboard tray, and its plasticky feel undermines the Inspiron's solid construction.A traditional, two-button touch pad would likely have worked just as well or better, but buttonless clickpads are in style at the moment. dell venue 8 charger The Inspiron's is appropriately sized for a 14-inch display and offers generally consistent clicks, though it takes more effort in the top centimeter or so. Pressing in the lower right corner performs a right-click. Clicks are relatively subdued and should go unnoticed in all but the quietest environments. While the smooth surface provides predictable tracking for your fingers, the pad is generally uninspiring to use. It's just not engaging. The Dell's port selection covers the expected bases. On the system's left edge is a Kensington lock slot¡ªthis should be a requirement for any student notebook along with a USB 2.0 port and a flash-card reader.
